Prenatal Paternity Testing on Maternal Blood: Frequently Asked Questions

Has the procedure been validated by the DNA paternity testing industry?

Testing on DNA from fetal cells in maternal blood has been highly validated by the scientific community during many years as well as by a number of DNA diagnostic laboratories (see references). Our Laboratory has 16 years of practical experience in non-invasive prenatal paternity and gender DNA testing.  The Center was the first company in the world that offers a non-invasive prenatal paternity test to the general public in year 2001.

How many weeks pregnant am I?

For our testing purposes the mother is required to be at least 10 weeks gestation for Prenatal Gender testing and for Prenatal Paternity testing. If you are unsure of the exact date of conception, please add 2-3 weeks after the date of your last menstrual cycle.

Where will I go to have my blood drawn?

We will arrange for the mother's blood to be drawn at local laboratory or hospital. There may be a blood collection fee associated with the blood draw and usually range from $20-$50.

Could previous pregnancies affect test results?

Previous pregnancies will not affect your test results. As mentioned above, our testing utilizes fetal DNA which has been proven to have a short life time. This means that once the child is born the fetal DNA will degrade from the maternal blood almost instantaneously.

What if the quantity of fetal DNA is too low?

In case of insufficient DNA from fetal cells in maternal blood:  a second blood draw and re-analysis later in the pregnancy is recommended. There is no cost to re-test if the first blood draw was done at 10 weeks of gestation or later.

Is my information kept private?

Absolutely, ensuring that your information is kept safe is of utmost importance to our staff. We offer a "hold at"; location option when shipping your sample collection kit. Also, our staff will not release any of the information regarding your case without prior consent. Furthermore, if special communication requests are made we will be certain to follow them. As with any of our DNA tests we offer the option of protecting it with a password. This ensures only those with the password will be able to access information regarding your case.

How and when do I pay for the testing?

If you do not intend to come to our Laboratory to have the maternal sample collected we do require a $100.00 (US) deposit for Prenatal Gender tests or a $200.00 (US) deposit for Prenatal Paternity testing to initiate the testing process. Upon completion of sample collection there is a section on the submission form which indicates payment options. The remainder of the test can be paid with certified cheque, money order, via PayPal or with Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer financing.
